Education, peace, progress – these three are the basic principles of the Chhatra League. The fraternal student organization of the ruling Awami League appears to depart from the three principles stated in its constitution. The organization that has led from the front in all historically important corners of the country, are now constantly involved in various misdeeds and giving rise to controversies.

In 1996, Jasim Uddin Manik, the then general secretary of the Chhatra League at Jahangirnagar University, celebrated the centennial of the rapes and sparked a storm of criticism across the country. And last Friday in Sylhet, 9 people, including Chhatra League activist Saifur Rahman, formed a party and raped a woman and created a storm of condemnation across the country.

Leaders and activists at different levels of the Chhatra League cannot get out of the circle of rape accusations. In the Corona situation, this month there have been at least five cases of rape against the organization’s leaders and activists in different parts of the country. Previously, there were reports of rape cases against BCL leaders and activists at different levels throughout the year. The organization’s leaders have also been charged in the rape case. The largest number of cases of rape has come from the temptation of marriage.

According to political analysts and intellectuals, BCL leaders and activists are having the courage to engage in heinous crimes such as rape only after national politics has been corrupted and with the patronage of political leaders at the local level.

Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Emeritus Professor at Dhaka University, told Kaler Kanth: “Students are an advanced part of society. In our country they have always been in various movements. But now they are no longer in that trend. There are no student parliament elections anywhere. If there is a student parliament, they have authority. They can see if the students are having trouble somewhere. Now the administration has no authority, nor does the student parliament. Now only the student body of the ruling party is in control. They don’t care about anything. They don’t even need the support of ordinary students. They are involved in unimaginable crimes like taking the wife from the husband and raping her. I think if we choose regular students in the educational institution, the environment will improve a bit. ‘ He said: ‘Luxury has increased in society to an extreme. Moral decline has occurred. As a result, incidents such as child rape by students and gang rape are occurring. Now we see the brutal form of capitalism. There is a hidden fascism in capitalism. They have a tendency to do what they want. These incidents are increasing due to the political patronage of the leaders and workers of the student organization.

Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, a professor at Dhaka University, told Kaler Kantha: “These incidents are very sad. It’s not that it’s happening all of a sudden. We found ourselves in deep crisis as we gradually fell. Economic development is happening, wealth is increasing, but human qualities are decreasing. Now there is no ideal in front of us. Lack of ideology, lack of principles: they have corrupted politics. If national policy were free from contamination, government policy would be different. So these uncomfortable incidents were less. For now, time will pass with the patches. Now he wants to solve the problem with punishment. But punishment is not the solution. We need to wake people up to stop them. This requires a party with clear political ideals and statements.

Member of the Presidium of the Awami League and Minister of Agriculture. Abdur Razzak told Kaler Kantha: “Such incidents are very sad. The Chhatra League has led all progressive movements in this country from the front. It is unacceptable for the leaders and activists of such a traditional organization to be involved in a heinous and barbaric crime such as beating the husband and raping the wife. Action will be taken against all those who indulge in such audacity.

When the former president and general secretaries of the Chhatra League inquired about this, no one agreed to comment. On condition of anonymity, a general secretary told Kaler Kantha: “This Chhatra League is not ours. I don’t want to make any statement about it.

When asked, BCL President Al Nahyan Khan told Joy Kaler Kanth, ‘BCL is a great organization that reaches out to the villages. Many times selfish people join this organization. They are involved in various misdeeds in conflict of personal interest at the local level. The responsibility for all this rests with our organization. We are working hard to suppress them.

The writer Bhattacharya, general secretary of the Chhatra League, told Kaler Kantha: “Those who have committed heinous acts at MC College are not on any committee of the Chhatra League at any level. Even after this, an attempt is being made to hold the Chhatra League accountable. The Chhatra League believes in respect for women. We give these instructions to our employees. We will never tolerate any injustice towards women.

On November 8, 2016, a rape case was brought against Mahim Ahmed, publicity and publications secretary of the Sreepur Upazila Chhatra League in Gazipur, at the Joydebpur Police Station.

On October 24, 2016, a case was brought against Riyad Hossain, vice president of the BCL district, for allegedly raping a school leader from the Belkuchi police station in Sirajganj. Earlier, an influential BCL leader from Mirpur Bangla College was charged with raping a leader of the organization with the promise of marriage. Later, the leader committed suicide without seeking justice from the Awami League leaders of different levels, including the central leader of the Chhatra League.
