The Supreme Court has subpoenaed Younus Ali Akand, a Supreme Court attorney known for filing public interest litigation to explain allegations of making “insulting remarks” about the country’s judiciary via social media.
He has been asked to appear in person in court number one of the Appellate Division headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on October 11. You have been asked to explain the matter through a virtual court. BTRC was also instructed to reserve the account by removing Yunus Ali Akand’s status from Facebook.
A bench of four judges from the Appeals Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain approved the order on Sunday. Additional Prosecutor Attorney General Murad Reza on Sunday drew the attention of the Appeals Division to statements made by Younus Ali Akand on Facebook, calling them “gross contempt of court.”
The court then asked the Chief Counsel of the Supreme Court, Counsel Fida M Kamal, Counsel Munsurul Haque Chowdhury, Counsel Abdul Matin Khasru, Presiding Counsel of the Supreme Court Bar Association AM Amin Uddin, Counsel Ruhul Quddus Kajal and attorney Manzil Mor to investigate the matter. The court ordered after the lawyers gave their opinion on the virtuoso.
Previously, the Appeals Division had summoned another Supreme Court attorney, attorney Mamun Mahbub, for commenting on Facebook about the judiciary. The lawyer appeared in court and requested an unconditional written apology.
