A rare amoeba has been found in household water supplies in the US state of Texas. Alerts have been issued in eight cities after the incident. The scariest thing is that this free-living single-celled creature destroys the brain if it can enter the human body.

Nigeria Flowery ‘spreads through water. It enters the brain and destroys the nerves. These amoebas live in warm rivers, ponds, lakes, and springs. Apart from this, these amoebas are also found in the ground and pools where hot water falls in industries. Alerts have already been issued in the cities of Lake Jackson, Freeport, Engleton, Brazoria, Richwood, Oyster Creek, Clut, Rosenberg following the discovery of an amoeba in Texas waters.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has prohibited the use of this water without a toilet.

Previously this amoeba called ‘Nigeria Flowery’ was found in Pakistan. In 2012, many people died from this in the country. It usually enters through the nose when people swim. Nigeria Flowery is also known to scientists as the ‘brain-eating’ amoeba.

When this amoeba enters the brain, no serious symptoms are seen. The first symptoms include a mild headache, neck pain, fever, and abdominal pain. According to the Florida Department of Health, 143 people have been infected with amoebas in the United States so far. Only four of them survived.

From 2009 to 2016, 34 people in the United States were infected with this rare disease.
