Permission to carry out his legal career in the two divisions of the Supreme Court (sections of Appeal and Superior Court) has been suspended for two weeks.

The high court also ordered the BTRC to “block” his account by removing his comments on the judiciary from Younus Ali Akand’s Facebook page.

He has also been asked to appear before the appeals court headed by the Chief Justice on October 11 to explain the notice of contempt issued against him.

A virtual appeals bank of four judges headed by the Chief Justice approved the order Sunday.

When questioned, several senior Supreme Court attorneys told bdnews24.com that this was “probably” the first time a court had ordered the BTRC to block a certain person’s Facebook.

Additional Attorney General Murad Reza reported to the appeals court on Sunday morning some of the comments made by lawyer Younus Ali Akand on Facebook about the judiciary.

He pleaded guilty to contempt of court, saying Yunus Ali’s comments were “gross contempt of court.”

Later in the afternoon, the court approved the order after hearing statements from the Supreme Court’s Senior Counsel Fida M Kamal, Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, Abdul Matin Khasru, the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, AM Amin Uddin, the lawyer Manzil Morsad and the secretary of the Bar of the Supreme Court, Ruhul Quddus Kajal.

Previously, the high court had issued a contempt of court notice against lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub for making “negative comments” about the judiciary on Facebook.

The Appeals Division acquitted Mamun Mahbub after pleading guilty and promising no further “abusive acts” in the future.

However, in that order, the court said: “The proceedings in this case have been recorded for the future and will be preserved.”

Yunus Ali Akand, who submitted a written petition after various incidents in the country, lost Jatiya Sangsad’s eleventh election by the Jatiya Party nomination from the Dhaka-6 constituency.

Recently, on Bangabandhu’s birthday, he started a new discussion calling for the release of BNP leader Khaleda Zia.
