A Nigerian court sentenced a 13-year-old boy to 10 years in prison for insulting Islam. After this incident, 119 volunteers from different countries have promised to serve their sentences.
Director of the Auschwitz Memorial Museum in Poland. Piotr Suensky says he and 119 volunteers from around the world agreed to serve a month in prison each on behalf of the teenager. He has personally asked the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to forgive the teenager.
The teenager made disparaging comments about God during an argument with a friend in August in northern Nigeria’s Kano state. The country’s Sharia court found him guilty of the charges and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
The boy’s lawyer filed an appeal against the verdict earlier this month, arguing that his sentence violated the rights of the child and the Nigerian constitution. A hearing date for this appeal has not yet been set. The ruling violates the African Charter of the Rights of the Child and the Constitution of the Republic of Nigeria, said Kola Alapinni, a lawyer for a teenager.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has also called for an urgent review of the court’s ruling. However, the Nigerian president did not comment.
