The bride tied up her husband in the dorm at Sylhet MC College Police arrested Saifur Rahman, the main defendant in the gang rape case.
He was arrested in Chhatak in Sunamganj on Sunday morning. Police said they have been searching for those involved since the incident.
Earlier, the rapist’s husband had filed a case at the city’s Shahparan Police Station on Saturday morning charging three other people, including six mentioned in the incident.
The defendants in the case are Saifur Rahman, Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Tareq, Arjun Lankar, Rabiul Islam and Mahfuzur Rahman. Four of them are students at that university. In addition, three others have been shown as unidentified defendants. They are all involved in the politics of the Chhatra League.
The police launched an operation to catch the accused immediately after the incident. Police also recovered a pipe pistol, four Ramdas, a knife and two iron pipes from Saifur’s room around 2 p.m. Friday.
The officer in charge of the Chhatak Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, said that the police arrested Saifur on the basis of secret information. As he fled through the area adjacent to the Chhatak ferry in the morning, a police team led by SI Habibur Rahman PPM from the Chhatak Police Station arrested him.
Last Friday night, the husband and wife went for a walk around the MC College area. At that time, 5-6 people from the university campus took the couple to the residence by force. The 19-year-old housewife was gang-raped while keeping her husband in a room there.
Police rescued the couple at 10 p.m. The bride was admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital by Shahparan Police. After this incident, there are massive protests in Sylhet demanding riots and justice.
