The incident took place at the university in the Tilagarh area around 9:30 pm on Friday. The girl was picked up from campus, taken to a dorm and raped, police said.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Jyotirmoy Sarkar told bdnews24.com: “The bride came to visit MC College with her husband. At one point, her husband walked out the door of the university to smoke a cigarette.
“At that time, 7/8 young men took the girl by force, took her to the MC College dorm and raped her.”
The police officer said that when her husband protested, they beat her.
Upon receiving the news, the police admitted the girl to the One Stop Crisis Center of the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital around 10:30 pm.
Police have launched an operation to catch the criminals, said police officer Jyotirmoy Sarkar.
Meanwhile, seven people have been charged in the MC College dorm rape incident, they are Chhatra League activists. Police recovered a gun from the room of a man named Saifur Rahman.
Shahparan Police Station OC Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said they recovered a tube gun, four Ramdas, a knife and two iron tubes from Saifur’s bedroom room on Saturday morning.
He said: “These weapons were recovered from the room of the defendant Saifur Rahman during a raid on the dormitory of MC College at night. Preparations are underway to file a weapons case in this incident. “
In addition, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Mahfuzur Rahman Mashum, Arjun, Rajan Ahmed and foreign BCL activists Rabiul and Tareq Ahmed, who are master’s students from the university’s English department, have been named as involved in the incident.
Among them, Saifur Rahman’s village house is in Balaganj, Rabiul’s house is in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district, Mahfuzur Rahman Mashum’s house is in Sylhet Sadar upazila, Arjun’s house is in Zakiganj de Sylhet, the Rony’s home is in Habiganj and Tareq from Sunam upaganj is a resident of Sunamganj.
Although no case has yet been filed in the rape case, the OC said an operation is underway to catch all seven.
