The Ukrainian Air Force Antonov-26 transport plane is known to have crashed 2 km from the Chuhuiv military air base at 8:50 pm local time on Friday (11:20 pm Indian time on Friday). It immediately caught fire. Rescue teams managed to extinguish the fire in an hour’s effort.
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has confirmed the news of the accident. “I am shocked by the whole incident,” Anton Zerashenko, the country’s deputy interior minister, told AFP. So far 22 deaths have been reported. Also, 2 people could not be found. A search operation is in progress to find them. It is unknown at this time what caused the accident.
The minister added that there were a total of 28 passengers on board the crashed military plane. Of these, 21 are army apprentices and the remaining 6 are crew members.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep regret for the accident. He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He wished the injured a speedy recovery. In a Facebook post, Volodymyr Zelensky said he would visit the area where the military plane crashed on Saturday.

The Ukrainian president has also announced the formation of a commission of inquiry into the cause of the accident. He said the commission would study the circumstances under which the plane crashed.
