Police have launched an offensive against BCL activists accused of gang-raping a young woman while her husband was detained at the Sylhet Murarichand (MC) College shelter. Police recovered domestic and foreign weapons from the home of an accused rapist around 2 a.m. Friday. However, the police have not been able to arrest any of the accused so far.
Confirming the matter, the Officer-in-Charge (CO) of Shahparan Police Station, Abdul Qayyum, said: “We raided the MC College hostel at night and recovered several items, including a pistol, four Ramdas and a knife from the Saifur Rahman’s room. ” There is a weapons case pending against them.
Earlier in the evening, the young woman came to visit MC College with her husband. At that time, some leaders and activists of the Mahanagar Chhatra League forcibly took them to the university dormitory from the university campus. They gang-raped the girl while keeping her husband in a room there. Shahparan police rescued them at 11pm. The girl is currently in treatment at the OCC at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. The accused activists are said to be supporters of Ranjit Sarkar, former secretary for youth and sports of the Awami League of Sylhet district.
In this regard, the superintendent of the MC College shelter, Jamal Uddin, said: “I have heard who keeps the husband and wife in the shelter.” Later the police came to rescue them. He declined to comment further.
MC College principal Saleh Ahmed said police were on the scene. They are investigating the matter. However, as far as I know, the husband and wife were detained at the shelter.
