According to the South Korean Ministry of Defense, the 48-year-old father of two worked in the fisheries department. He was in a patrol boat near Yonpyeong Island when he disappeared last Monday. He was captured by the northern army. The soldiers shot him in the head and burned his body. The man probably wanted to flee to North Korea. The incident has caused great outrage in the south. Law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring the border between the two Koreas. South Korean President Moon Jae-in called the killings “tragic” and said such incidents were “unacceptable.” He called on North Korea to take “responsible action” in the killings.
According to the Blue House, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has written a letter to Moon apologizing. He described it as “unexpected and embarrassing.” He expressed deep regret for the disappointment of Moon and the people of South Korea.
