A small motor boat with 13 passengers sank in the Padma River at Harupur in Rajshahi’s Paba upazila. Eleven of them swam back to shore, but two students are still missing. The incident took place around 5 p.m. on Friday.
Zakir Hossain, deputy deputy director of the Rajshahi Fire and Civil Defense Service, said 13 passengers were cruising the Padma River in a small motorboat on Friday afternoon. The ship sank at Harupur on the Padma around 5pm. 11 passengers made it to shore with the help of local people and swam. The other two are missing.
Zakir Hossain also said that the condition of two of the rescued people is critical. They were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Divers from the fire service are working to rescue the missing.
According to local sources, one of the two missing persons is Soochana (20). He is a third year BBA student from the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) in Dhaka. He lives in the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka. He came to visit his uncle Jalal Uddin’s home in the Kholabona area of Paba upazila. Another missing person is Rimon (14). His home is in Naogaon. She is in the eighth grade.
