Dhaka: The passport issuance of 54,000 Rohingya in Saudi Arabia has created unrest in Dhaka-Riyadh. Riyadh is pressuring Dhaka to issue passports to these Rohingya who went to Saudi Arabia some 40 years ago.

However, Dhaka has made it clear to Riyadh that these Rohingyas will be issued if they have passports or evidence from Bangladesh before, otherwise it is not possible.

According to sources, in 1986 the then King of Saudi Arabia took 54,000 Rohingya for humanitarian reasons. Those Rohingya don’t have any documents now. No passport. These Rohingya do not know the Bengali language. Not even Bangladeshi. However, Saudi Arabia is now pressuring these Rohingya to issue Bangladeshi passports. This has created unrest between the two countries.

The Rohingya are scattered in different countries of the world. The Rohingya have also taken refuge in Saudi Arabia at different times. The Rohingya have gone to Saudi Arabia in various ways even after 1986. Many of these Rohingya have dishonestly taken passports from Bangladesh. Again, many have taken refuge in Saudi Arabia without any documents through corridors. Now Saudi Arabia is asking Bangladesh to make passports for these Rohingya.

Hard line covered in passport issuance
Recently, there was a complication with the return of Saudi expatriates who stayed in Bangladesh. Many Iqamas had expired. Again, many were unable to return to the country without a plane ticket. Saudi expats also protested in Dhaka for a few days. However, the Rohingya passport issue was not resolved even though it was resolved through discussions between Dhaka-Riyadh officials. No one can say right now how this problem will be solved. However, despite pressure from Riyadh on the Rohingya passport issue, Dhaka is on the hard line.

The Rohingya are getting involved in crime in Saudi Arabia
The Rohingya are involved in various crimes in Saudi Arabia. That is why they are now not in the good books of the Saudi government. There are 472 Rohingya prisoners in various prisons in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia wants to bring these Rohingya back first. Saudi Arabia has asked Bangladesh to take back these Rohingya. However, after checking the documents of these Rohingya from the Bangladeshi Embassy in Riyadh, it has been seen that about 70 of them have Bangladeshi passports. The rest do not have passports or documents.

Return of the Rohingya vs. Workers
If 54,000 Rohingya from Saudi Arabia do not receive passports, if they do not return them, a campaign has been launched so that 22 lakh of Bangladeshi workers in that country can be returned. However, the accusations are unfounded, the chancellor said. AK Abdul Momen. He says there are some naughty people in every country who are running these kinds of campaigns. That is not right.

Chancellor’s statement
Foreign Minister on the Rohingya passport issue in Saudi Arabia. AK Abdul Momen said that if any Rohingya in Saudi Arabia had a passport or evidence from Bangladesh before, it would be reissued. However, those who do not have a Bangladeshi passport, proof will not be reissued.

He added that Saudi Arabia has stated that it does not keep stateless persons. So the Rohingya need to have passports. However, Saudi Arabia has said that issuing passports to Rohingya does not mean sending them back to Bangladesh.
