Police arrested 18-year-old Akash Pandey for killing his mother and hiding her body in Kotalipara, Gopalganj. At that time a bottle of kerosene used for cremation was recovered. The arrested Akash Pandey is the son of Manoranjan Pandey from Kalikabari village in Radhaganj junction of Kotalipara upazila.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mohammad Chanowar Hossain confirmed the information at a press conference at the office of the Additional Superintendent of Police in Gopalganj on Friday afternoon.
He told the press conference that on the night of June 26, his son Akash wanted food from the mentally ill mother Hasi Pandey. At that moment, when the mother threw the food at Hasi Pandey and tried to hit him with a bowl, Akash hit his mother on the head with a stick. Hasi Pandey was killed on the spot. Later, Akash took the body away in a boat about 120 meters from the house. There, the body was placed on a pile of dry wood, kerosene was poured into it, and it was set on fire.
After this incident, Akash falsely searched for her mother in different places and then with her father she filed a case at the Kotalipara police station accusing 4 people, including Nana Juran Barai.
Juran, the father of the murdered Hasi Pandey, was angered and filed another case under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act accusing five people, including his son-in-law Manoranjan Pandey, of beating his daughter to death for dowry.
After these incidents, the police launched an investigation. Akash Pandey, the eldest son of the late Hasi Pandey, was arrested Thursday night. He confessed to killing his mother during police questioning. Later he confessed to having burned the body and disappeared. The police sent Akash to jail on Friday afternoon for killing his mother.
