The country will not return the 54,000 Rohingya who have been living in Saudi Arabia for decades. Foreign Minister. AK Abdul Momen told reporters after attending a function in the capital on Friday.
Dr. AK Abdul Momen said: “The Saudi government has told us that if we give them (Rohingya) passports, they will benefit. Because they (Saudi Arabia) don’t keep stateless people.
“This does not mean that the Saudi government will send them back to Bangladesh,” he said.
Abdul Momen said: “Many years ago, about 39 or 40 years ago, the then Saudi authorities saw the difficult situation and took the Rohingya away. They did not have a passport and spoke Arabic.
Today, more than 11 lakhs of Rohingya live in Bangladesh. They took refuge in Myanmar on several occasions to escape persecution by the Myanmar authorities.
