Restoration of the National Assembly Building to its original design by world-renowned architect Louis I. Kahn has begun. To this end, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works has undertaken a project called construction and modernization of ancillary facilities, including Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and Sangsad Bhaban. The Rs 234 million project is being implemented by the Department of Public Works.

Concerned people say the project has been carried out to modernize Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and Sangsad Bhaban, as well as to remove rooms and decorations that are outside of the original design.

According to sources from the Parliament Secretariat, the original design by architect Louis Kahn was discussed at a meeting of the National Assembly last month at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to review architectural issues. There, in the main parliament building, it was decided to remove some of the unplanned rooms and decorations.

If you want to meet the speaker. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury told Kaler Kantha on Wednesday that the architectural style of the parliament building is attractive and eye-catching. Therefore, care must be taken in the maintenance and general renovation of the Parliament building. Parliament Leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also has instructions in this regard. The original design was obtained from the United States at the behest of the Prime Minister. Now the renovation of the parliament building will be completed following the original design of Louis I Kane.

Concerned officials said that on December 1, 2016, a copy of the original design of the United States Parliament building area reached the Secretary of Parliament. Previously, in 2014, the Prime Minister ordered to bring the original design of the parliament building. According to him, the Clerk of Parliament contacted Louis Kane’s David & Wisdom organization and collected four sets of designs. It has two sets in the National Assembly and one set each in the Department of Architecture and the National Archive.

According to the Department of Public Works, the Tk 234 million project was approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) last fiscal year to order the area of the Parliament building as designed by Louis Kahn. Under this, modernization and electrical work will also be carried out inside the building. In addition, two 9-story buildings will be constructed in the area adjacent to Khejurbagan in Manipuripara for public works workers and security guards of the parliament building.

The session of Parliament began on February 15, 1972 in this building designed by Louis Kahn. Previously, construction work was completed on January 26 of the same year. Its construction began in 1984.
