He made the announcement in a videoconference broadcast at a high-level virtual meeting titled “Digital Cooperation: Action Today for the Future Generation” held at UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 75th UN General Assembly.
Sheikh Hasina said that the Kovid-19 epidemic not only exposed the power of digital services, but also exposed the nature of digital inequality in the world.
“Half of the world’s population does not have access to basic Internet services. We must eliminate this inequality.”
Speaking about the goal of building a ‘digital Bangladesh’ by 2021, the prime minister said that the government’s initiative for digitization in Bangladesh has led to a huge leap in terms of access to internet services. The total number of Internet subscribers is above 10 crore 34 lakh.
“Our digitization has given our people a great opportunity to play the role of ‘agents of change’.”
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the government of Bangladesh has attached importance to digital connectivity and has played a useful role in bringing about social change, including economic development and the empowerment of women.
“It is also helping to implement the SDGs and the fight against Covid-19,” he said.
Highlighting the goal of building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh by 2041, three-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: “We want to keep our youth at the center of this journey of change.”
From there, he pledged to build digital academies and centers of excellence in all secondary schools in Bangladesh by 2030, considering the emerging job market in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Bangladesh’s interest in establishing a strong global partnership to achieve the common goal of promoting digital services.
