Dhaka: Sheikh Aminur Rahman Himu, 55, has been arrested in Brunei on charges of human trafficking. It has snatched around 33 million rupees from at least 400 people in the name of providing work in the country.
Three people, including Aminur Rahman Himu, were arrested in the Kafrul area of the capital on Wednesday (September 23) at noon with the help of the National Intelligence Agency (NSI) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-3). . Other detainees are- Md. Nur Alam (38) and Bablur Rahman (30).
A foreign pistol and a magazine full of bullets were recovered from Himu’s body.
According to RAB, Himu is the main accomplice of Mehdi Hassan Bijan, the main ringleader of human trafficking in Brunei. He collected fake demand letters in 2019 and sent 60 people to Brunei. Many of them went to Brunei on loan and sold land and led dehumanized lives without finding work. They later returned to the country on their own account.
Himu, who does not have a recruiting license of his own, has been smuggling to Brunei using Nazrul International Service and Highway International RL.
Based on the allegations of numerous victims, Sheikh Aminur Rahman Himu is known to be one of the accomplices of Mehdi Hassan Bijan and Abdullah Al Mamun Apu, the main perpetrators of human trafficking in Brunei. According to Mehdi Hasan Bijan’s lawsuit, Himu used to smuggle human beings from Bangladesh to Brunei illegally.
The RAB-3 (CO) Commander, Lt. Col. Rakibul Hasan, said this at a press conference held at the RAB-3 office on Wednesday (September 23) afternoon.
He said that detained Himu, as a member of Parliament, was targeting unemployed youth from different parts of the country and offering them well-paid jobs in Brunei. He used to receive three or four lakh rupees from everyone for his work in Brunei. But the victims were unable to find work in Brunei and lived a human life working in the jail across the street.
Himu used to talk about good companies in Brunei and human trafficking. But no such company was found in Brunei.
He added that there are about 25,000 Bangladeshi workers in Brunei. A large part of the workers went to Brunei through human trafficking and now live inhumane lives. There are some 3,000 Bangladeshi-owned companies registered in Brunei, most of which are nominal.
These companies sell employment visas from Brunei to Bangladesh through intermediaries using fraudulent schemes. One lakh and twenty lakhs has been set to go to Brunei, but an employee has to go to Brunei through these corridors at a cost of around 3-4 lakhs rupees.
Lt. Col. Rakibul Hasan said that by law, a worker can stay in Brunei for up to two years. Many people have expired their visas because they have been unable to fundraise for immigration for two years. After that, they do not return to Bangladesh, but are instead trafficked to Malaysia via the neighboring province of Sarawak with 2,000 Brunei dollars through a human smuggling ring.
Currently, no visas are issued in the name of Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia. Originally, Brunei is currently used as a route and destination for international human trafficking activities. The recruiting agents, the brokers in Bangladesh, are working together as an organized circle.
Its purpose is to demand monthly benefits from workers, physically abuse them, and force them to return home. So that they can accept more workers this way instead of their work visa.
The Bangladesh High Commissioner is known to have petitioned the Interior Ministry to cancel the passports of seven people, including Mehedi Hasan Bijan, the main head of visa brokers, for various crimes including deceiving and torturing Bangladeshi workers on foreign soil. . Later, following the Interior Ministry’s decision, the Passport Department canceled the passports of seven people, including Mehedi Hasan Bijan.
On September 10, victims of human trafficking in Brunei organized a sit-in in front of the National Press Club to demand the arrest of Bangladeshi runner Mehedi Hasan Bijan. There have been 20 cases in the name of Mehedi Hasan Bijan in the country and he is currently in hiding in Bangladesh.
