The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Posts and Telecommunications recommended the removal of Sudhanshu Shekhar Bhadra, Director General of the Postal Department, on allegations of corruption and irregularities.
The standing committee made the recommendation at a meeting held in Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday.
Awami League MP and committee chair Benazir Ahmed told The Daily Star by phone: “There are many allegations of corruption against the postmaster general.”
“At today’s meeting, all the members of the standing committee discussed his involvement in corruption and voted to remove him,” he said. Subsequently, the committee unanimously recommended his removal.
Furthermore, everyone on the committee agreed that despite being infected with Kovid-19, it was not correct for him to attend the Ganobhaban function on August 14, he added.
“Despite being infected with Kovid-19, the committee also considers it suspicious that she participated in the event in the presence of the prime minister,” Benazir said.
He said that although Sudhanshu Shekhar Bhadra was present at the meeting, he did not say anything about the accusations against him.
Benazir said: “The committee is of the opinion that Sudhanshu Shekhar Bhadra has raised questions among the people of the country while he is in office.”
The committee chairman said that the corruption allegations against Sudhanshu Shekhar Bhadra are being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The ACC questioned him on September 1 as part of an investigation into allegations of embezzlement of hundreds of millions of rupees without fully implementing the Post-e-Center for Rural Community project.
The Daily Star tried to take Sudhanshu Shekhar’s statement but was unable to contact him.
