On March 17, 2011, just days after the death of then-General Secretary Khandaker Delwar Hossain, BNP President Khaleda Zia, on the eve of her visit to Saudi Arabia, appointed Mirza Fakhrul as the party’s general secretary. At that time, there was a great reaction among some of the top leaders of the party. Many openly opposed Fakhrul as acting secretary general. Although there is no acting secretary general position in the party constitution, Fakhrul served as acting general secretary for about five years.
The BNP’s Sixth National Council was held on March 19, 2016. Even then, there was widespread opposition within the party to prevent him from becoming secretary general. Even Tareq Rahman himself spread the news that he did not want Fakhrul for the post of general secretary. On March 30, 11 days after the council was formed, Mirza Fakhrul was relieved of her post by a single decision by Khaleda Zia and became full secretary general.

Colonel (retired) Mostafizur Rahman (198-198), KM Obaidur Rahman (198-198), Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder (198-1998), Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan (1996-2008), Khandaker Delwar Hossain (2006-2011).
