Palestine has decided not to assume the presidency of the Arab League in protest at the normalization of relations between the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain with Israel. Earlier, Palestine made a proposal at an Arab League meeting to condemn the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for normalizing relations with Israel, but that proposal was not accepted.
Speaking at a press conference in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian Foreign and Immigration Minister Riyad al-Maliki said that the Palestinian state was rejecting the post of interim president of the Arab League in the wake of recent events.
“Even after normalizing relations with Israel, we have made this decision because the Arab League has sided with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain,” he said.
Riyad al-Maliki said that during his presidency of the Arab League, the Arab countries will celebrate the normalization of relations with Israel so that the Palestinian state is not honored.
However, he said that Palestine would not renounce its membership in the Arab League. Riyadh al-Maliki also said that it would create a bad scene.
The top Palestinian diplomat said the conference, which was scheduled to take place under the auspices of the Arab Peace Initiative, had seriously violated the relationship between the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain with Israel.
Palestine has called the agreement to normalize relations between the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain with Israel as a betrayal of the Palestinians and a violation of Arab League policy. As a result of this agreement, the dream of forming an independent Palestinian state has been shattered, analysts say.
On July 15, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates formally signed an agreement to normalize relations with Israel. The agreement was signed at the White House, the official residence of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and was mediated by President Donald Trump. Israel and the United States say that soon some more Arab countries will follow the same path as the United Arab Emirates-Bahrain.
