Dhaka: Dhaka-2 MP and former minister, defender Kamrul Islam, was given a seven-day pre-trial detention by local food operator Ali Ahmed in a case of spreading a telephone conversation through social media.
Dhaka’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Muhammad Asaduzzaman Noor, referred it on Tuesday (September 22).
Gazi Mohammad, former president of the Dhaka Bar Association, sued the plaintiff in court. Shah Alam, former Secretary General Mizanur Rahman Mamun and several other lawyers attended the hearing.
Later, Gazi Shah Alam told banglanews: “We have heard the request for a 10-day pretrial detention requested by the investigating officer in the case of the Digital Security Law.” The court was satisfied and he was granted a preventive detention of six days.
On the night of September 11, Kamrul Islam filed the case on behalf of the local food operator Ali Ahmed and the so-called migrant journalist Konak Sarwar at the Kamrangirchar Police Station. Feed operator Ali Ahmed was arrested in that case. Inspector Mohammad Saiful Islam is investigating the case.
According to the incident details, Dhaka Total Cable Network has cable network line connection in the Khalifabagh and Rasulpur areas of Kamrangirchar. The feed operator Ali Ahmed withheld the money owed by the company. He filed a complaint with the local MP Kamrul Islam. In response to the complaint, MP Kamrul called Ali Ahmed and asked him why he was not paying.
There is a massive online campaign against Lawyer Kamrul Islam, who recorded the conversation and called it extortion. The record was posted on social media Facebook and YouTube during the campaign against Kamrul by the so-called expat journalist Kanak Sarwar and the BNP’s climate change secretary AKM Wahiduzzaman. However, Wahiduzzaman was not charged in the case.
In the case presented at the Kamrangirchar police station, it is mentioned that, as an elected representative, he (MP Kamrul) has to arbitrate various incidents in the area. Hundreds of cases have not been filed in the last 12 years due to arbitration.
The case further alleges that the coroner was unable to resolve the dispute face-to-face, so he took the initiative to resolve the complaint over the phone. But Ali Ahmed recorded the conversation with malicious intent and provided it to a Kanak Sarwar. Kanak Sarwar made it viral on YouTube.
