Planning Minister MA Mannan said the project titled “Hilsa Resource Development and Management” was approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the meeting from Ganobhaban’s official residence via video conference with participants in the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
After the meeting, the Planning Minister told reporters that the goal of the project is to increase hilsa production through the implementation of the fish conservation law and the management of conservation sanctuaries of mother hilsa and jatka.
Member of the Planning Commission (Department of Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institutions) Moha. Zakir Hossain Akand said the project would create alternative employment for 30,000 fishing families, distribute 10,000 legal nets, and raise awareness about the conservation of mother Hilsa and Jatka.
He said that hilsa’s contribution to the country’s total fish production is at most 11 percent and 1 percent of GDP.
“Most of the world’s hilsa is grown in this region. Of this, 80 percent is produced in Bangladesh. But due to various reasons, the reproduction and movement of the hilsa are affected. That is why the Hilsa development project was approved ”.
A total of five projects costing Tk 1,026.13 crore were approved at the ECNEC meeting on Tuesday. The total amount will be provided with the government’s own funds.
