Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on the United Nations to create a “credible and realistic” roadmap for all to implement their commitments and clearly address global challenges.
“For the United Nations to move towards the right goal in a century or more, UNGA-75 must deliver on its commitments and create a roadmap that is acceptable and realistic for all in addressing global challenges,” he said.
He made the remarks while addressing a special session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday (Bangladesh time this morning) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN.
Sheikh Hasina also called on the United Nations not to allow geopolitical rivalries to weaken it.
“We must not allow any geopolitical rivalry to weaken the United Nations,” he said. We got it from the previous ones. That is why we are indebted to them and, for the sake of future generations, we must also make the United Nations a truly functioning international body. “
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh said: “I would like to say that we have witnessed many moments that have shaped the new history of our human civilization. UNGA 75 has brought us another similar moment.
“This epidemic has made it even more difficult for us to achieve our 2030 agenda,” he said, referring to the ongoing global epidemic, Kavid-19.
Sheikh Hasina further said: “The current challenges, including the ongoing epidemic, have spread across the world and the inability to deal with such crises in the international arena has been revealed.”
In this context, he said, the epidemic has shown that both developed and developing countries need the United Nations more than ever.
The prime minister said that Bangladesh has benefited greatly from various development activities led by the United Nations. That is why Bangladesh is in debt to the United Nations.
On the peacekeepers, the Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is committed to helping maintain world peace. The United Nations peacekeeping force now has the largest number of troops and police in our country.
He mentioned that 150 peacekeepers from Bangladesh have sacrificed their lives to ensure peace in the conflict-prone countries of the world.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Sheikh Hasina said that organizing the anniversary of the founding of Bangladesh is of special importance as the birth of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman coincided with the centenary.
He further said, ‘Bangabandhu had said at the UN session in 1974 that the UN would reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people in the future. It is a testament to Bangladesh’s confidence in the United Nations and multilateralism. “
He added: “I pay tribute to all United Nations officials and agencies for their tireless efforts and dedication.
Foreign Minister. AK Abdul Momen told a virtual press conference on Monday that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, like other world leaders, will address the UN General Assembly on September 26. She will give a lecture in Bengali like every year.
