The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has requested everyone to verify the validity of the phone by checking the IMEI before purchasing any phone. BTRC has taken this initiative to prevent the importation of illegal cell phones or mobile phones.
In addition, customers have been asked to collect receipts for the purchase of mobile phones. The UNB news agency reported the news. The request has been made by means of a notice from BTRC.
Customers who wish to purchase the phone can obtain a 15-digit IMEI number by dialing * # 06 # from the respective phone.
To verify the validity of the phone, send a text message with the IMEI number (for example: KYD 1234569012345) to 16002. A return SMS will let the user know if the phone was imported legally.
Mobile phones with fake or cloned IMEIs will be identified through the National Equipment Identity Registry (NEIR) and disconnected from the network, the BTRC said.
The telecoms regulator has already created a database of international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers for legally imported mobile equipment since January 2016.
