The family of a deserving student named Jewel Khan has been accused of expelling him from society for the past four months by defaming him for studying at Notre Dame College in Dhaka. Not only that, if any member of the family tries to associate with anyone else in society, their house is also at risk of being demolished.
Even last Eid-ul-Azha, the family was not allowed to participate in social animal sacrifices. The inhumane incident took place in the Tarafpur union’s Pathaliapara village in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail.
Jewel Khan is the son of Mofizul Islam from the village of Pathaliapara in Tarafpur upazila. After passing the HSC from Notre Dame College and completing a Masters in Bengali from Dhaka University, he participated in the 40th BCS written exam. It was learned that both parties have filed a case at the police station and in court.
According to the details of the incident, Shariful Islam, the son of cousin Abdur Rashid Khan, has been having a long-running dispute with the Jewel Khan family over the boundaries of the house. As a result of this dispute, on May 1, Shariful Islam’s men came to Jewels’s house with sticks and iron bars and beat the family members. The incident was led by Shariful Islam, Abdul Basheed Mia, Ramzan Ali, Abdul Latif, Tariqul Islam, and Litu Anam. Addressing Masud Jewel, son of Shamsul Haque from the same village, he said: ‘You studied at Christian College (Notre Dame College in Dhaka). Also, you studied in Bengali at Dhaka University. Those who study at Notre Dame College are Christians and those who study in Bengali at Dhaka University are atheists. You’re an atheist too. ‘ He threatened to take social action against atheists. They also announced the expulsion of Jewel’s family.
When Jewel and her brother Maruf Khan protested against this, Rafiqul Islam and his accomplices randomly wounded Jewel and her father Mofizul Islam, her mother Amena Begum, her grandmother Yaron Begum and her brother Maruf Khan. At his shout, local people rushed to rescue the wounded and admitted them to the Jamurki Health Complex in upazila.
The family has been ostracized since the incident. There are allegations that the family was not allowed to participate in social animal sacrifices during the last Eid-ul-Azha. It was also learned that if any member of the family tries to associate with another member of society, their house will be demolished and they will be evicted from the area.
Jewel’s mother, Amena Begum, said that despite this inhuman incident, Jewel’s family is being harassed on bogus charges.
The truth of the accusation was also discovered when he went to the town of Pathalia Para in Tarafpur and spoke with various people.
Mahmudul Hasan, a health worker from Tarafpur village, said that Jewel’s family does not care about anyone in society. Also, Jewel’s father talks sarcastically about the mosque and they don’t even pay the scholarship at the mosque. That is why the elders of the society said to keep them out of the society.
Ariful Islam, a resident of the same village, said that he had heard that the people of Shariful had taken everyone’s signatures to keep Jewel’s family out of society.
Abdul Based Mia, former village president of Matabbar Tarafpur Union Awami League, said: “We have become the defendants in the case as we try to resolve the dispute between the two families.”
Wahidur Rahman Ferdous, the number one member of the Tarafpur Union ward, said they have a partnership with 13 families. Some say that they have been kept out of society because they do not pay the society’s wages (the Imam’s wage). Some people say that Jewel’s father will not be in society because he keeps Jewel’s grandmother in society. We are trying to reach a compromise with both villagers.
Mirzapur Police Inspector (investigation) said. Gias Uddin said: “I have heard that some Matabbars in the village have defamed Jewel Khan because he was studying at Notre Dame College.”
Mirzapur Police Officer in Charge (OC) said. Sayedur Rahman said some village elders have announced that they will evict Jewel’s family with Christian calumnies. The matter is very inhuman. The police investigation has the truth of this. He said the police would take the necessary measures.
