The price of onion has dropped in the land port of Healy after import from India. These onions sell for Rs 25-40 per kg. 50 kg bags of rotten onions sell for just Rs 50-100.

The importation of onions from India through the land port of Healy stopped on Sunday. However, the importation of other goods is normal. The onion, which was allowed to be exported on Monday 14-15 through the Healy land port, could be re-imported tomorrow, port operators said.

Meanwhile, importers have problems with the rotten onions imported on Saturday. They say they have to count the loss of half a million rupees.

Shahinur Islam, an onion importer at Healy land port, said the onions, which were allowed to be exported on the 13th, entered through the Healy land port on Saturday. A total of 248 metric tons of onions were imported from India in 11 trucks through this port.

Harunur Rashid, chairman of the Healy Port Importers Group, said the onions had been stranded across the border for five days and were unable to enter the country. According to the port merchants, 75 percent of the onions per truck have been damaged.

Onion importers have suffered losses in this situation. Upazila Nirbahi official Rafiul Alam said the onion market in Hili has been kept under control.
