After a five-day shutdown, Indian traders began exporting stranded onions to India on Saturday (September 19). But today, Sunday (September 20), India stopped exporting onions through the Healy land port again. No truck carrying onions entered the country from India through the land port of Healy until 12 noon on Sunday. The traders also said there is no possibility of exporting onions through the port until new instructions are issued. However, due to the import on Saturday, some good quality onions are selling at 40-50 Tk per kg, which is 10 Tk less per kg than yesterday.
Lutfar Rahman and Siddique Hossain, who came to the Healy land port to buy onions, told the Bengali Tribune: Occasionally there is a slight decrease in onion import news but it increases again due to no import. However, due to the importation of onions through the port yesterday, the price of onions in the port warehouses has dropped by Tk 10 per kg compared to yesterday. Yesterday, onions were sold at 50-60 Tk per kg in different warehouses, but today they are sold at 40-50 Tk per kg. In addition, there are other bad onions that are sold at Rs 10-30 per kg.
Harun Ur Rashid, Chairman of the Healy Land Port Importers and Exporters Group, told the Bengali Tribune: “The Indian government stopped onion exports last Monday without warning. It then issued a notification on Friday that they would export the onions that were tendered last Sunday. Under the permit, 248 tonnes of onions entered the country in just 11 trucks through the Healy land port on Saturday. Most of the 11 trucks that have exported onions are already rotting and leaking. Therefore, importers are suffering a lot even if they bring these onions.
He added: “There are still more than two hundred trucks carrying onions waiting to enter the country via various roads within India.” Furthermore, no decision has been made on the importation of 10,000 tonnes of onions. We are concerned about what they have decided or will do about it. We are afraid of being hurt. We do not know if the onion will enter the port today. Because only last Sunday’s tender was allowed for the export of onions. But Indian customs will not allow onions to be exported through the port until further instructions are given.
