Anu Ranjan Das, Principal of Dhaka South Degree College in Golapganj, Sylhet, retired on February 11. Following the nationalization agreement, he had to retire as a private teacher after serving for about four years. Also, two more professors have retired from this university.

Anu Ranjan Das told Kaler Kantha: ‘It is disappointing that we have not been assimilated for four long years. How much I have tried to nationalize the university. Ministry, how much I have run in the department. But I didn’t get the benefit of the government. Now I am a family, socially and emotionally disturbed.

Most of the 302 universities listed for nationalization are known to have obtained the consent of the Prime Minister in 2016. Following this nationalization decision, supporters of Professor Shahedul Khabir Chowdhury, former Secretary General of the BCS General Education Association, joined the movement ‘No BCS No Cadre’. They also filed a car petition. As a result, the university government gazette was issued on August 8, 2016. As Shahedul Khabir Chowdhury was Director (Faculty and Administration) of the Department of Secondary and Higher Education (Maushi), all nationalization work was under his jurisdiction. for so long. But for nearly four years, Mausi has finished his job. It is now being reviewed and selected in the Ministry of Education.

According to sources, the Ministry of Education has already sent the files of more than 50 schools to the Ministry of Public Administrations for verification. There, an undersecretary is reviewing all related files. As a result, the Ministry of Public Administration becomes entangled again. Then the file will go to the Ministry of Finance. With your consent, the file will go to the Secretariat of the Administrative Development Commission. Subsequently, upon recommendation of the Public Services Commission (PSC), the definitive bulletin will be issued to govern the jobs of teachers.

Teachers are concerned that this assimilation work will not be completed in the next four to five years if a new verification and selection is initiated in the next steps like the Ministry of Education. During this period, only half of the teachers and responsible employees will be required to retire as private employees.

Secretary of the Ministry of Secondary and Higher Education. Mahbub Hossain told Kaler Kantha: “After joining as secretary, I have formed five committees to complete the assimilation work quickly. Although the work has stopped for some time due to the corona, the work is moving fast now. Hopefully, there will not be a new verification and selection by the Ministry of Public Administration and Finance. I will speak with interested secretaries so that work in those ministries can be completed at more than one desk. We want to finish the job as soon as possible.

Zahurul Islam, president of the Association of University Professors (SAKSIS), a nationalized organization of university professors, told Kaler Kanth: Four years have passed, how much longer do we have to wait? We can no longer bear the sigh of retirement as private after working at a public university.

Concerned people say that because the assimilation work hasn’t been completed in four years, about 3,000 of the 12,000 teachers and 4,000 employees have already retired. They had to retire as private employees even after working at government universities. Teaching activities are hampered by the retirement of teachers and the non-appointment of new ones. There are even departments in various universities where there is not a single teacher.

Jalal Hossain, Acting Director of Padma Government College in Dohar, Dhaka, said: ‘We have 2,500 students. There is not a single professor in the Department of Botany and Chemistry. Even the director of the university has already retired.

Belal Chowdhury, principal of Karnafuli Government College in Rangamati, said: “In the last four years, 10 teachers have retired here. There is not a single professor of Chemistry, Mathematics, ICT and Bank Finance. There is only one teacher in Bengali and English. It is becoming difficult to run a university due to the crisis of teachers.

Shaheed Sirajuddin Hossain Government College in Jessore has no Physics, Mathematics and Management professors. Madhupur Government College in Tangail does not have professors in marketing and finance, banking and insurance. Mirzapur Government College does not have a professor of Botany and Agricultural Education. There is no professor of philosophy and political science at the Lama Matamuhuri School of Government in Bandarban.
