Imam slain with machetes in Gafargaon

Mymensingh: In Mymensingh Gafargaon Upazila, an imam named Azim Uddin (50) was shot dead by criminals on his way home after Esha’s prayers.

The killing took place around 8:15 pm on Saturday (September 19) in the village of Sadua in the Niguari union of the Pagla police station.

The Officer in Charge (CO) of Pagla Police Station, Shahinuzzaman Khan, confirmed the incident to banglanews.

The deceased was identified as Azim Uddin, son of the late Marjat Ali from the village of Beldia under the Niguari union.

OC Shahinuzzaman said that Hafeez Azim Uddin used to lead prayers at the Suruj Ali Jame mosque adjacent to the Sadua government primary school in the union’s Sadua village. On Saturday, he was on his way home on the Sadua-Beldia highway after completing Esha’s prayers when unidentified criminals stabbed him in the head, abdomen and hands and fled with serious injuries.

He died shortly after due to a hemorrhage. When the locals informed the police, the police immediately went to the scene and recovered the body.

The motive for the murder is still unknown. OC Shahinuzzaman Khan said legal action will be taken in this regard.
