Commenting that the Awami League and democracy do not go together, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: ‘The chemistry of the Awami League is that there is no one but me. They will run the state only from power at any cost.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said this at a virtual discussion meeting on Saturday on the occasion of the ‘Disappearance of Free Journalism Day’ organized by the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ-Part).

The President of the Dhaka Union of Journalists, Quader Gani Chowdhury, and the General Secretary, Shahidul Islam, chaired the function.

Mirza Fakhrul said: ‘The current government has made all the necessary laws to hold the nation together. The purpose is the same, so that the dissidents do not speak out and their misdeeds are not made public. It seems to me that what is happening in Bangladesh today is not an isolated incident. When they came to power in 1972, they still silenced the people by enacting various laws against the people. We have to lead that movement and fight forward and defeat this fascist government in a united way. We must remember that they are not strong at all. Those who vote day and night and survive on lies can never be strong. “

BNP Secretary General said: “I think the trend of authoritarian rule has increased around the world and Bangladesh is no exception. Democracy no longer exists. Democracy has lagged behind for global reasons. You’ll notice how the United States has been called the cradle of democracy, how Trump has stood up to the media since he came to power. From the head of state of a traditional democratic country like the United States, which is never desirable.

Referring to journalists as one of the main foundations of democracy, the BNP general secretary said: “You are at the forefront of the democratic movement despite various adversities. Come on, let’s defeat this undemocratic government through a united and strong movement and let’s establish a responsible popular government.

Ruhul Amin Gazi, Chairman of the Federal Union of Journalists of Bangladesh, said: “The late Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury used to say that the Awami League is a box where even a Razakar becomes a freedom fighter.”
