In Indian-administered Kashmir, the country’s military has long been accused of torturing and unjustly killing locals. An Indian army spokesman said on Friday that it had killed three unidentified “rebels” in the village of Amshipora in Shopian on July 18. Now, the investigation has revealed that they were residents of the Rajouri district, whose families had alleged that they had been killed in an organized shooting.
Indian Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said in a statement: “The investigation into Operation Amshipora has been completed as instructed by the army authorities.” The investigation initially found a series of evidence that suggested that the Armed Forces had exceeded the powers exercised under the Special Powers Act (AFSPA) during the operation.
He said: “Preliminary evidence collected in the investigation indicates that the three unproven terrorists killed in Operation Amshipora are Imtiaz Ahmed, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Ibrar. They were returning from Rajouri. Your DNA report is waiting to arrive. Police are investigating his links to terrorism or related activities.
Earlier, a police statement claimed that army officers had been shot during the operation.
Shortly after the incident, images of the three victims went viral on social media. From there, the relatives identified them and accused them of illegal murders.
Naseeb Khatana, a cousin of the slain Ibrar, said after the Indian military claimed responsibility for the illegal killings on Friday that the dead were all cousins. They went to Shopian from Rajouri for work.
“They came to the Shopian on July 16 and that was the last time we spoke to them that night,” Naseeb said. It was during the lockdown, so we thought they might have been quarantined. We were waiting, but there was no news.
He said: ‘After seeing the photos, we identified the relatives and filed a complaint. The army claimed they were terrorists. How much more can they harm innocent people!
Another family member of the victim said that even after a long search for the relatives’ DNA test results, it still has not been found.
“The samples were taken on August 3, but the results have not yet come in,” he said. Calling one from each family today, they admitted that three people had been killed in a fake shooting. We want their murderers to be brought to justice and punished. We want the bodies of family members. ‘
Ibrar was the youngest person killed in that fake shooting in July. His family said he was working as a laborer to study.
Human rights activists claim that Indian troops in Kashmir often kill civilians for financial gain and medals and continue to be called “rebels”.
Such incidents have happened before. In May 2010, Indian troops killed three civilians near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Machil area, sparking protests in the valley after information emerged from a Kashmir police investigation. Soldiers killed the three innocent people for the sake of reward and branded them “armed rebels”.
