BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is looking for a man of his choice to establish full control over the party. Little by little he began to place his associates in various important positions. However, he is known to face opposition in many places while forming the committee.

The current structure of BNP as an organization is in the hands of President Khaleda Zia. He made Ziaur Rahman’s party one of the largest in the country in 1986. Most of the most important and important leaders of the various party committees are considered “Khaleda Zia’s team. But her eldest son, Tareq Rahman, has led the party for two and a half years. And that’s why the team is discussing the issue of establishing your control. But BNP policy makers are unwilling to open their mouths about this. Because nobody wants to displease Tareq Rahman.

When asked, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told Kaler Kantha: “The fact of ordering the party is not true. The entire BNP is united under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. There is no division in the team. In response to the question, he said: ‘If the position is vacant, only qualified leaders will be posted. The acting president leads the team well.

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the party’s standing committee, avoided the issue, saying: ‘Everyone at BNP likes (Tareq Rahman). The whole world is his.

Another member of the standing committee, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, said: “Tareq Rahman has nominated only those he considers suitable. And the team has accepted them as worthy.

On condition of anonymity, another leader said: ‘Tareq Rahman owns everything according to Warish Sutra. In that sense, he is my owner. Other than that, none of the leaders appointed by her mother Khaleda Zia is challenging her.

Tareq has been leading the party since BNP President Khaleda Zia went to jail in February 2016 after being convicted in a corruption case. She chairs the virtual meetings of the permanent committee of the party. Khaleda Zia is in ‘Firoza’ in Gulshan after her sentence was suspended on March 25 by a government executive order. However, there have been no changes to the team management rules. In addition to the government, BNP’s legal leaders also say that Khaleda Zia is not legally free yet. As a result, she cannot do politics today. Furthermore, as he is physically ill, doubts have been raised at all levels of the party about whether he will be able to do politics in the future. For this reason, despite various discussions, the senior party leaders have gradually accepted Tariq’s authority. They say that although they dislike many things, they do not want to leave the party at the end of their political life and write their names on the register of ‘distrust or disbelief’.

In this context, the name of the late BNP secretary general, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, has come up over and over again in the discussion. The political life of many of his supporters is believed to have been ruined when he took a stand against the party by putting forward reform proposals after one o’clock. Some of Mannan Bhuiyan’s supporters have left the BNP. Again, many are able to return to the team, but they are in a corner.

The BNP has been led by Khaleda Zia since 1973. Although Tareq Rahman was influential when the party was fully under his leadership, he was not as visible. However, behind the conduct of the 2001 elections and the formation of the cabinet, some of Tariq’s supporters are believed to have found a place. However, after taking over as acting president, Tareq’s role in decision-making was first visible when Khaleda Zia was in jail. On June 19, 2019, he nominated Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Selima Rahman to the standing committee. Although the two were known to be close to him, the party did not criticize him. However, some said at the time that the number of people on the standing committee who spoke out in favor of Tareq’s views had increased.

Some people think that the formation of the BNP’s Foreign Affairs Committee on February 15 last year under the leadership of Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was done by dissolving the previous committee. In addition to Amir Khasru as chair of the committee, several members, including Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Barrister Mir Helal and Barrister Nowshad Zamir, are known to be close to Tareq. Although he is a supporter of Tarique, there is criticism among pro-BNP lawyers about Nowshad Zamir.

Previously, on April 17, 2016, the Dhaka metropolis north BNP committee was formed with the people chosen by Tareq Rahman. MA Qayyum, accused of the murder of the Italian citizen Caesar Tabela, has been in Malaysia for many years, but Tariq appointed him president of the north. However, there are criticisms in the BNP about that decision. Because it is believed that Qayyum will not be able to return to the country until the BNP comes to power. In that incident, Mahanagar Uttar BNP suffered serious organizational damage. Leaders of the Northern Committee were attacked by agitated leaders and activists while paying tribute at the grave of Ziaur Rahman on September 1 last year.

Tareq’s latest decision also sparked some controversy over the appointment of the committee’s acting secretary general. After Ahsan Ullah Hasan’s death in Corona on June 6, committee vice chairman Abdul Ali Naki was given the responsibility of acting secretary. But according to the constitution, Anwaruzzaman Anwar should be appointed chief deputy secretary.

Meanwhile, after the last parliamentary elections, despite taking the initiative to organize the party, Tarique Rahman was unable to do so in many places due to various obstacles and objections. There are many discussions in the team about this. Although a Juba Dal partial committee was announced on January 17, 2016 under the leadership of Saiful Alam Nirber, who is known to be close to Tarique, a full committee has not been formed in all parts of the country to date. Although the time was extended in two phases until October last year, it was not possible to form the committee in the current period. Just two days after the announcement of the last Juba Dal committee of the southern Chittagong district, the committee’s activities were abruptly suspended on September 9. Apart from this, Tareq Rahman was unable to form a full committee at the initiative of various organizations, including the Nationalist Voluntary Party and the Women’s Party. Although most of the district committees in the Barisal division have expired, they could not be formed due to internal disputes.
