The wholesale price of good quality onion in the Pabna region has dropped from Tk 100 to Tk 80 per kg two days ago. However, it is retailed at a price of Rs 100-110 per kg. In retail trade, Indian onions sell for Rs 60 to Rs 70 and domestic cross onions for Rs 60.
In the middle of last week, the domestic onion was sold at Tk 120 and the cross onion at Tk 90 at retail. Indian onions weren’t available in most grocery stores back then.
Razzak Enterprise, a grocery store in Pirerbagh, Mirpur, said its store only carried onions from the Pabna region. You have to sell it at 110 Tk per kg, as the purchase price is high.
However, the price was found to be slightly lower at the Barabagh market in Mirpur. Zahirul Islam from Ajmer Bhandar, a grocery store, told bdnews24.com that he sold onions at 100 Tk / kg, garlic at 90 Tk / kg and ginger at 250 Tk / kg. Mostafa Kamal, a vendor at the wholesale market no. 1 of Mirpur, said that the domestic onion price has decreased by Tk 20 per kg to Tk 80 over the past two days. Prices may fall further as consumer demand drops too low.
Abdul Awal, wholesaler from Karwan Bazar, reported a similar situation.
He said that onions from the Pabna region are sold at 75 Tk, Faridpur at 80 Tk, and Indian onions at 60 Tk per kg in Karwan Bazar.
Onion prices started to rise in India last Friday on the news of rising onion prices. In the space of two days, the price of onion rose from Tk 40 to Tk 80. In the middle of the week, on the news of the suspension of onion exports to India, the wholesale and retail prices of onions crossed the 100 mark in 24 hours.
To keep the market normal, the Ministry of Commerce has taken various measures, including import initiatives from alternative countries, limiting LC margins, and reducing import tariffs. Furthermore, the onion was sold at Tk 30 per kg through TCB since September 13.
The government claims that the country still has around five lakh tonnes of onion stocks compared to demand of around two lakh tonnes per month. Even then, some traders and stockists are trying to destabilize the market by seizing the opportunity. Trade Minister Tipu Munshi believes that the artificial crisis will not last if imports from alternative countries like Egypt and Turkey start. This time, the government has also taken the initiative to import onions through TCB and sell them online at affordable prices.
