More than 3,000 people in northwest China have been infected with a bacterial infection called brucellosis. The outbreak began last year after bacteria emerged from a biopharmaceutical company, government sources said, citing US broadcaster CNN.
Brucellosis is also known as Malta fever or Mediterranean fever. It is transmitted mainly through livestock. Symptoms of this disease include headache, muscle aches, fever, and fatigue.
Health authorities in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province say 3,245 people have been diagnosed with brucellosis. Its presence has been initially detected in another 1,401 people. However, no one has yet died from this disease.
Authorities say 21,648 of the city’s 2.9 million residents have been screened so far.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is transmitted from animal to human and from human to animal. Transmission of this disease from person to person is rare. Most people become infected as a result of ingesting bacteria through unclean food or by inhalation.
