China has launched military exercises near the Taiwan Strait amid a visit by one of the most senior US officials to Taiwan in decades. Beijing has said it is conducting military exercises close to the system, which is important for maintaining the sovereignty and integrity of the continent. Amid continuing tensions between Beijing and Washington, China has organized the exercise in the style of Taiwan. China considers autonomous Taiwan to be its own territory.
US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Keith Crouch is on a two-day visit to Taiwan. Keith has been visiting Taiwan as the island’s highest-ranking State Department official for decades. A meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ying-wen is scheduled for Friday.
On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang accused the United States and Taiwan of colluding and causing trouble. However, he did not mention any information about the visit of senior US official Keith.
Speaking to reporters, Ren Guoqiang commented that using Taiwan to control China or relying on foreigners to build is an unrealistic idea. “Those who play with fire will burn,” he said. The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army participated in the Taiwan-style exercise.
Although he did not elaborate on the exercise, Ren said it was necessary and valid to protect the sovereignty and integrity of mainland China. Previously, the Chinese military conducted a two-day large-scale exercise in the southwestern coastal region of Taiwan last week.
