Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi of Hifazat-e-Islam resigned from the post of Director General (Muhtamim) of Hathazari Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa on Thursday (September 16) evening in front of a student movement.

Allama Shafi made the announcement at an evening gathering of members of the Hathazari Madrasa Shura. However, the meeting decided to keep him as an advisor to Hathazari Madrasa, said Maulana Salauddin Nanupuri, a member of the Madrasa Majlis.

Earlier on Wednesday (September 18), a group of students protested the appointment of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, CEO of Hathazari Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasa, with a six-point demand, including the expulsion of Allama Shafi’s son, Anas Madani, from the madrasa.

At one point, the agitated students took up position on the Chittagong-Khagrachhari road in front of the madrasa. Later, the police took them off the road and put them inside the madrassa. Allegations of vandalism inside the madrasa were also made against the students.

The decision to remove Anas Madani from office was made at a meeting of the Majlis Shura on Wednesday night in the face of student unrest. Various demands were accepted at the meeting, including a promise to stop the “torture” of the madrassa students.

Meanwhile, a group of agitated students again tore apart the protest on Thursday morning. A large number of law enforcement officers were deployed there to control the situation. In the evening, the Ministry of Education issued a notice announcing the closure of Hathazari Madrasa.

According to the circular, permission was granted on 24 August to start the book department of the Qawmi madrasas and to conduct examinations under certain conditions.

But as the conditions were not duly met, the Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari upazila of Chittagong District was declared closed until further notice. ‘

However, if the situation does not calm down, the Shura members will meet again at 8 pm on Thursday at the Hathazari Madrasa Majlis. There, Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi announced his resignation. Immediately after its announcement, the agitated students declared the end of the movement.

Hathazari Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa is the largest and oldest madrasa in the country. Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi ran the Qawmi madrasas as the general director of this madrasa.
