Dhaka sent a letter to India requesting it to export onions to Bangladesh. In a letter to the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry made the call, citing the friendly relations between the two neighboring countries.
The letter to India stated that Bangladesh’s announcement of a sudden change in its onion export policy had deeply concerned Bangladesh. Because it has a direct impact on supplying the daily necessities in the Bangladesh market.
The letter further stated that the Indian government’s sudden announcement on September 14 to quickly halt onion exports undermined the basis for talks and understanding between the two friendly countries in 2019 and 2020. Bangladesh would like to respectfully report that during the two-day meeting at the trade secretaries level between Bangladesh and India, held from 15-16 January this year, Bangladesh requested India not to impose a ban on essential foods. Bangladesh further requested that if essential food items are prohibited, it be informed in advance. The issue was also raised by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her VVIP visit to India in October last year and such incidents were requested to be reported in advance.
Regarding the letter, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam told reporters that there was an unwritten agreement between the two countries that India would continue to export onions to Bangladesh and that if there were any changes to this, India would report first to Bangladesh. There is such an understanding between the two friendly countries. We call on India to reverse this decision very soon and we hope to get good results very soon.
