Trade Minister Tipu Munshi said this at a press conference in the Secretariat on Wednesday on the situation of storage and supply of essential commodities, including onions.
TCB has been selling onions at Tk 30 per kg on the open market since September 13. There, a buyer can buy a maximum of 2 kg of onions.
The onion market in the country has become uncontrollable like last year, as India stopped exporting. The price of onion has doubled in one day.

TCB’s onion is running out ‘instantly’
To handle this situation, the Ministry of Commerce has decided to import one lakh of onions through TCB.
Tipu Munshi said that TCB does not import more than 10,000 to 12,000 tons of onions per year.
“This time we were thinking of bringing 30 to 40 thousand tons. As India has stopped exports of onions, we believe that we will import a lakh of onions through TCB. “
The Commerce Minister said TCB will sell online as there are complications in sales due to the labor crisis.
“We will sell onions through e-commerce companies. We have high hopes of being able to sell at least between 10 and 12 thousand tons of onions per month at affordable prices through electronic commerce ”.
Trade Minister advises stopping the purchase of onions
To make the market tolerable, the onion imported by TCB will be sold through the district administration like last year, the minister said.
Onions imported by large traders outside TCB last year were also sold with subsidies.
Tipu Munshi said, “The experience from last time is very useful for us this time.
“The onions were sold through OMS distributors (last time) in addition to hiring some new distributors in violation of TCB rules. This time too, the onion market will be kept under control by following these methods. “
E-Cab ‘Ready’
E-Cab, an association of online marketing traders, says that the government marketing agency TCB is ready to market onions in times of crisis.
E-Cab announced its readiness in a press release late Wednesday after learning of the Trade Minister’s decision.
“Once they get onions from the government, e-commerce companies will start campaigns and soon the government will start selling onions online at fixed prices,” he said.
E-Cab, the Ministry of Commerce and TCB have already jointly formulated a policy in this regard. By virtue of this, it has been proposed to form a coordination and monitoring committee.
This committee will monitor whether the selected online groceries are selling onions at the price set by the government according to the rules. The committee is headed by AHM Safiquzzaman, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Commerce.
The committee will include a consumer rights representative, an e-cab representative, an online store representative and a TCB representative, e-Cab said.
In addition, another 3-member committee is also being formed to investigate customer complaints.
Mohammad Abdul Waheed Tamal, General Secretary of E-Cab, said: Apart from this, we have gained experience by supplying emergency products in the closing area, selling mangoes online via amla and selling cows via korbani haat digital and deliver meat to our homes.
“The Ministry of Commerce has been with us all the time. The success of our recent ventures has brought us into the onion market today. “
In preliminary talks, it was proposed to supply 10 percent of the onions imported by the government through e-commerce companies. The Ministry of Commerce is also thinking of increasing this amount if necessary.
E-Cab expects 10,000 tons of onions to be marketed in online stores under this program.
