India has imposed a ban on onion exports to Bangladesh. As a result, the importation of onions through the Healy land port has stopped since last Monday. However, around a hundred trucks loaded with onions wait on the other side of the border to enter the country.
Meanwhile, Harun Ur Rashid Harun, chairman of the Healy Land Port Import-Export Group, said that onions stuck in the past three days were already spoiling.
Although the Indian government insists that it will not supply onions to Bangladesh, it will only supply onions that were tendered last Sunday. India did not export onions all day on Wednesday. Importers in the Hili land port are concerned about whether they will export onions. Importers have been waiting for onions to be imported since Wednesday morning, but exporters say they have been unable to export onions due to non-issuance of permits to Indian Customs.
Meanwhile, prices are starting to fall in the wholesale and retail markets on the news that onions are entering the country. The onion sold on Tuesday ranged from Rs 7 to Rs 80 per kg. Now that onion sells for Rs 60-75 per kg.
Haroon Ur Rashid Haroon, President of Healy Land Port’s Onion Importers Group, said that around 10,000 metric tons of onions have been obtained so far LC. Last Monday, the government of India stopped the export of onions due to Hotkari’s decision. As a result, onion importers in Healy’s land port have suffered financial losses. He said that the Indian government had stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh in the same way last year.
