Locals said the protesters inside the madrassa were supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam secretary general, Junaid Babungari, who was relieved of his post as deputy director of the Hathazari madrassa last June.
A group of students from the Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa began protesting at the institution’s premises at around 2.30pm on Wednesday.
The directors of Hathazari Madrasa could not be reached for comment.
When the agitated students left the madrasa, the police let them in.
Police and eyewitnesses told reporters that hundreds of students suddenly began protesting inside the madrassa at noon. They began chanting slogans demanding the resignation of the deputy director of Madrasa (Education), Anas Madani. At the same time, they also raised six-point demands.
Agitated students also vandalized Anas Madani’s room and Junaid Babungari’s Sheikh Ahmed’s room.
At one point, the protesters took up positions on the Chittagong-Khagrachhari road in front of the madrasa. Then the police took them out.
The protesters then closed the main entrance to the madrasa. The protest continued into the evening.
Chittagong District Police (North) Additional Superintendent Mashiuddaula Reza, who was at the scene, told bdnews24.com: “The police are stationed outside the madrasa. So far there have been no adverse incidents. “
Asked about the protesters’ demands, he said: “They protested inside the madrasah demanding various things, including the resignation of Anas Madani.” I learned that they have also distributed a brochure with various demands ”.
Leaflets distributed to protesters include the immediate removal of Anas Madani, the reinstatement of three teachers fired by Madani, the reduction of all “ incompetent and immoral ” teachers and staff appointed by Anas, the appointment of a new principal with the honorable release of ailing headmaster Ahmed Shafi and appointment of new madrassa students. Stop all forms of oppression and harassment.
After Shafi, activities at Hathazari Madrasa
Babungari lost his position
Hathazari Bara Madrasa, the leading Qaumi educational institution in the country, has more than 7,000 students.
Ahmed Shafi, who has been its CEO for a long time, is called by Qaumi students in the country as “the great lord.” Shafi, more than 95 years old, is the supreme leader of Hefazat-e-Islam, which has been campaigning for the establishment of an Islamic state.
Due to the age of Ahmad Shafi, there was a dispute over the authority of this madrasa.
Babunagari’s dispute with Ahmed Shafi’s supporters became public after Junaid Babungari was removed from the post of deputy director and Sheikh Ahmed was appointed at a meeting of the madrasa’s shura committee last June.
Locals say the protest took place at the madrasah on Wednesday.
