According to the BBC, the 32-year-old mentally ill man is in a coma. He is in treatment. He’s in ICU. His family has demanded an independent investigation into the incident.

The incident took place on a Melbourne road last Sunday. The man was being treated in a psychiatric hospital for mental illness. When he disappeared from the hospital on Sunday, hospital staff called the police.

When police arrested the man, a pedestrian recorded a video of the entire incident on his mobile phone. As seen in the video, a police officer first kicked the man hard in the head and then pushed him to the ground.

Video of the arrest went viral shortly after it was released online. Intense criticism began throughout Australia.

Victoria police said a unit of theirs had started investigating the incident.

There has been a severe lockdown in Melbourne for the past two months as coronavirus infections continue to rise.

The police have been given unprecedented powers to force local residents to comply with lockdown restrictions on health care. As a result, the police can jail anyone if they want to break the blockade.

But this incident on Sunday cannot be compared to the violation of lockdown rules. Because the person was already receiving treatment for mental illness.

Victoria Police claim the man was behaving erratically at the time of his arrest and struck a police officer.

What really happened?

Video images broadcast on the Seven News television channel showed the man walking down the street and waving in front of a police car.

At one point, he turned around and began to walk away from the front of the car. At that moment a police car hit him from behind.

A few minutes later, another video shows a police officer standing next to the man and trying to kick him in the head to prevent him from getting up. The police and five other officers then grabbed the man on the ground.

What is the family saying?

The man’s father accused the police of using excessive force during the arrest of his son.

He told The Herald Sun: “It looks like the video is from the United States or Beirut.

“The police are not above the law. He must be held accountable. He did not insist, but he was kicked. This is an exaggeration.”
