A case has been brought in a Jessore court against the Nilphamari magistrate, Masud Rana, for allegedly torturing the wife of a university professor to demand a dowry. Farzana Nasrin, an assistant professor in the English department at Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST), presented the case on Monday (September 14).
The judge of the Jessore Judicial Court of First Instance, Saifuddin Hossain, learned of the accusation and issued a subpoena. Defendant Masud Rana is the son of Abdul Alim from Aftab Nagar village in Santhia upazila of Pabna district.
Farzana Nasreen mentioned in the statement that the defendant Masud Rana is greedy for wealth and dowry. On June 21, 2019, she married a girl named Shamsi Nahid Region. He was later tortured for demanding a dowry and divorced on November 4 of that year.
Farzana Nasreen met Masood Rana on her mobile phone. The family got married on February 14 of this year hiding the previous marriage. During the marriage, Masud Rana received goods worth Tk 5 lakh and gold ornaments worth Tk 2 lakh. Soon after, Masud Rana demanded from his wife a dowry of Tk 10 lakh to buy a plot of land in Purbachal, Dhaka.
Masud Rana received a 5 lakh dowry. Masud Rana began to torture his wife for the remaining 5 lakh dowry. A month ago, Masud Rana came to his father-in-law’s house, beat his wife and left without receiving the dowry money. He then presented the case in court after several failed attempts at reconciliation.
