The shipment of 12 metric tons of hilsa went to India via the land port of Benapole on Monday evening, said Aswadul Alam, a fisheries quarantine inspector at the land port of Benapole.

Aswadul told bdnews24.com that the government approved the export of 1,450 metric tons of hilsa on September 10 on the occasion of Durga Puja, even though the export of hilsa fish was prohibited.

Nine companies in Bangladesh have been authorized to export these yarns. Each company has been allowed to export 150 to 165 metric tons of hilsa.

Mihir Mukherjee, owner of Nila Enterprise, a C&F agent in Benapole, said that this time the export price of hilsa was $ 10.8 per kg.

Hilsa shipment will be exempt from Indian and Bangladeshi customs duties. He said the export value of 12 metric tons of hilsa in 800 boxes in two trucks from the first shipment was $ 120,000.

Khulna’s ‘Jahanabad’ is the exporter of these yarns Be Freud Limited and the importer from India is JK International from Kolkata.

Although Padma Hilsa is popular with Bengalis in West Bengal, the government of Bangladesh has stopped its exports at different times considering the demand from the country.

Before 2012, hilsa was exported to India. The government stopped exporting hilsa after 2012 due to decreased production of hilsa.

However, last year on the occasion of Durga Puja, the government approved the export of 500 tons of hilsa. Hilsa’s export has stopped again since then.

This time Durga Puja, the best festival of the Bengali Hindu community, begins in the second half of October.
