India has stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh via Benapole port to curb rising onion prices in the Indian market. Onion exports on this route have been suspended since Monday (September 14). C&F agent Kartik Chakraborty said this citing Petrapole customs officials.
He said recent rains and floods in various parts of India have disrupted onion production in areas where it was grown. Due to which the supply of onion is reduced and the price of onion is increasing in the Indian market. Faced with this situation, the Indian government informed Petrapole Customs on Monday to increase the price of onion. According to him, the customs authorities have informed them that all kinds of onion exports will stop from Monday until new orders. An official notification on the matter has not yet been issued, but it will be issued soon, he said. At the same time, no onion will be exported against LCs that are open for importing onions and the tender has been completed.
Rakibul Islam, secretary for cargo affairs at Benapole C&F Agents Staff Association, said that after two truckloads of onions entered Bangladesh this morning, they were suddenly informed by Indian customs authorities on behalf of the Indian government at 11 a.m. the morning that no more trucks would enter Bangladesh. He said that many importers will face losses due to this.
Saiful Islam, an onion importer, said: “In the afternoon, the Indian exporters and the C&F agents told us that India would not export onions.” The Government of India has also banned customs from exporting onions and has also told us that we do not export onions. Due to their decision, many of our importers have opened LC to import large quantities of onions.
Now we are in metabolism. We tell them to export the onions from the LC that we have open. Unlike many of our LCs, many trucks are standing on the road with goods. Now if they don’t give onions, then we are concerned about what will happen to these onions. Therefore, a decision needs to be made by holding a government-level meeting very soon.
