After some photos of a burqa-clad mother playing cricket with a child went viral in a field in the Paltan area of the capital Dhaka, she said she was very happy with the whole incident.

However, mother Jharna Akhter said that those who criticize her are doing it wrong because they do not understand the issue.

In an interview with BBC Bangla, he said that he played cricket even after wearing a burqa to protect his son’s whims and give him pleasure.

After some photos of mother Jharna Akhter batting and bowling with her son were published in national newspapers, the images were spread on social media and there has been a heated discussion for the past three days.

Aside from the game, most of the comments are about the mother’s burqa. Some say they can’t find a Bangladeshi mother in the movie, while others say that clothes are not the main problem here; the mother’s excitement to play with her child is the main problem here.

Shakil Anwar from BBC Bangla talks about this with him:

Jharna Akhter: Everyone in our family is happy about all of this. You do not understand? I’m happy too. Why happy: footballer Kanchan is my brother. Family is the world of sports. My son goes to the madrasa. From there I brought him at four in the afternoon. I admitted him to the Kazi Nazrul Academy. He was going to come to the field that very day. Then baby Yamin says mom, hit, I bowling.

BBC: Have you picked up the bat and ball for the first time or have you played before?

Jharna Akhter: No, no, I always played with my son downstairs. She used to play cricket and badminton.

BBC: Did you play with your son when you were younger?

Jharna Akhter: I am also a player. I used to play track and field. My event at Dhanmondi Sports was javelin throw, high jump, long jump. I was the district champion.

BBC: The pictures that have been printed in the newspaper show that you are playing ball. What was the type of ball? Is it a spin, fastball, or medium pace?

Jharna Akhter: The ball that doesn’t hit from the front slowly, I made that ball. I don’t know if it’s called a spin. (Laughter)

BBC: Your child must be watching the media talking to you, the image is in print. What is your statement?

Jharna Akhter: What will I say? She would always tell me, “Mom, if I were a great cricketer, I could meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.” Now I am saying that if Allah makes you known, Allah can make you meet at any time. My mother now tells me that I want to speak face to face with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Let me see you now. Tell me.

BBC: There is a lot of praise for what is being said about you. Many say that her clothing, her strong religious beliefs have not slowed her down. You are playing cricket in public with your son. Again, many criticize that it is actually the Bangladeshi countryside where women in full burqas are playing cricket. What do you think?

Jharna Akhter: Those who are criticizing are actually doing wrong. This is not a bad thing. I have no problem if I am misunderstood. I want God to correct their mistakes. It should be understood that when a child has a whim, the mother tries to have all kinds of whims. I will not keep the whims of the child when I see him with a burqa. What is it? Why am I wearing more burqa If I have to wear a double burqa, I will continue to talk about the child. I will go through the joy of the child. That is why I am a mother.
