Bangladesh has achieved two successes in UN peacekeeping missions. India is in fifth position with 5,353 peacekeepers, Pakistan is sixth with 4,440 peacekeepers and Egypt is seventh with 3,093 peacekeepers.
By the way, Bangladesh began participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in 1979 as a military observer in Iraq and Iran. The Bangladesh Navy and Air Force have been serving this mission since 1993. Members of the Bangladesh Police have been participating in this mission since 1989.
According to the latest ISPR data, as of last May, 1,60,243 Bangladeshi peacekeepers served 54 missions in 40 countries around the world. 1,703 Bangladeshi women peacekeepers have fulfilled their duties. At present, 255 people are performing their duties. Bangladesh peacekeepers are currently on duty in 11 countries around the world. 151 people had to give their lives in the performance of this risky duty.
