Law enforcement agencies have recovered the body of the Supreme Court lawyer, lawyer Asif Imtiaz Khan Jisad (33). Citing relatives, the police claimed that Asif committed suicide by jumping off a building in Kanthalbagan, the capital, around 4:30 am on Friday. His body was later recovered from Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Jisad is the son of lawyer Shahidul Islam, a former deputy from the Sirajganj-5 constituency (Belkuchi-Kamarkhand). Shahidul Islam lives in Mirpur with his family. Asif lived with his wife Sabrina Shahid Nishita in his father-in-law’s house and was a lawyer on the Supreme Court. In addition, he was legal advisor to Motijheel Desh Trading Corporation.
Paritosh Chandra, the police officer in charge of Kalabagan, told NTV Online on Friday afternoon.
Quoting family members, Paritosh Chandra stated: ‘I went to that building. I spoke to the people at Asif’s father-in-law’s house. His wife claims that Asif used to get drunk regularly. She was also drinking beer last night. The two started arguing at night over drinking beer. At one point, Asif jumped from the ninth floor of the house at 183 Free School Street in Kanthalbagan. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
OC Paritosh Chandra added: “It is being investigated whether it is murder or suicide.” Details will be known after the autopsy. A year ago, Asif was in rehab for three months and his family treated him. Asif fell in love and got married. His family did not accept the marriage. So she lived in her father-in-law’s house.
In the morning after the incident, the in-laws’ people informed the family of Asif’s father, the OC said. He said: ‘We heard it from Asif’s father, Shahidul Islam. Shahidul Islam has filed a written complaint with the police station. We will initially take it as a case of unnatural death. Then the matter will be decided after an investigation.
Defender Shahidul Islam was a Member of Parliament for the Jatiya Party in the Sirajganj-5 (Belkuchi Kamarkhand) constituency from 198-90. His other son, Asif Imran Khan, died of a heart attack on April 18 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
