After a long tug of war, India and China finally agreed to reduce border tensions with Russian mediation. The two most populous countries in the world agreed on a five-point plan to ease tensions in eastern Ladakh.
The foreign ministers of the two countries reached the agreement on Thursday (September 10) at a side meeting of the ongoing conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Moscow. The meeting between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jayashankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was initiated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
A joint statement issued by India’s Foreign Ministry on Friday said the two ministers agreed on five plans in “open and constructive” discussions.
A joint statement issued by the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Thursday’s meeting said plans to ease border tensions include compliance with all existing agreements and protocols on border management; Maintain peace and stability and refrain from all activities that may provoke the situation.
The statement said that the two foreign ministers agreed that the current situation in the border area does not benefit either party. That is why the two sides agreed that the border forces on both sides should continue their talks, withdraw troops quickly, keep an adequate distance and ease tensions.
The two Foreign Ministers also agreed that guidance should be taken from the ongoing consensus reached between the top leaders of the two countries on the progress of Sino-Indian relations. This is believed to be an indication of a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2018 and 2019.
The two countries also agreed to continue discussions and communication on the issue of the Sino-Indian border through a special envoy.
The Indian and Chinese armies have clashed on the Ladakh border since last May. The two countries recently accused each other of shooting at the Royal Line of Control after 45 years, following a deadly clash in June. China is also alleged to have taken control of a significant amount of Indian land on the border.
After the first round of violence, the foreign ministers of the two neighboring countries spoke by phone about Russia’s intervention. But in the real LoC, the situation has not calmed down, it has become more complicated. Later, on the sidelines of the SCO summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov started a meeting between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jayashankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
