The joint statement said that Jaishankar and Wang Yi agreed that both sides should be guided by the current consensus reached between the top leaders of the two countries on the progress of Sino-Indian relations. The decision is believed to have been made in reference to meetings between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2018 and 2019.
