Myanmar State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi has been expelled from the Sakharov Prize Community by the European Parliament (EP). Al Jazeera said the decision was made because of its support for the state crackdown on the Rohingya people.

The EP awarded the Sakharov Prize to Suu Kyi in 1990, a year before she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It is considered the highest reward for human rights activists. But now Suu Kyi will no longer be able to participate in any of these award-winning events.

According to an EP source, Suu Kyi received the Sakharov Prize for her work before 1990. She was removed from the list yesterday as it was not possible to withdraw the award due to circumstances. This is the strongest ban on EP.

In 2016, more than seven lakhs of Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after being pursued by the Myanmar military. The UN investigators have concluded in their report that the operation was carried out with the intent of genocide.

Myanmar has denied allegations of genocide and military-led repression. They have been claiming that the operation was carried out to protect the country from Rohingya militants.

In a December speech before the International Criminal Court (ICJ), Suu Kyi expressed her support for the Myanmar army, accused of genocide. Although there were 3,389 words in the 30-minute speech, he never delivered Rohingya. Source: Al Jazeera.
